The Bird

Earlier today a bird flew into my front door…

The door was closed and the bird sadly didn’t make it…

I read where birds can become lost in the glass and fly into windows thinking they are heading into more open spaces not knowing they are rushing headfirst into a hard object.

Hmmm…

How often do we become lost, unaware of our surroundings and run straight into danger?

How often do we mistake shiny things for good?

How do we get so disillusioned with all the glitter and noise and miss out on the still, small voice telling us to slow down, be careful, don’t go too far?

Jesus tells His disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. He warns them of those with long,  drawn out prayers and those who yell from the street corners.

God isn’t found in the loud places with flashing lights.

He is found in the lowly manger, the belly of a big fish and in the storms on the seas. He is found in the green pastures, behind prison walls, and in the caves of the mountains. God is in the lilies of the valley, on our knees in prayer, and in the very breath we breathe.

I am so guilty of being drawn by loud noises and flashes of light. I’m afraid I’m headed straight into an immovable, hard object that will alter my life in some way if not end it completely. Just like the bird, I am so easily distracted.

All the stuff and nonsense in the world is trying so hard to keep us from walking with the Father. It only takes one breath…

We are one breath away from crashing into the window…

We are one breath away from changing our crash course…

Lord, take my hand, guide my feet, keep me between your rod and your staff; protect me from my flesh. Great are you Lord, Holy is your Name.

  1. I can so relate to this b/c I think a few weeks ago I was the bird that hit the shiny clean window. Fortunately, I am just “stunned” but am unable to fly. I am scared and nervous about the correct course to take. I feel like God has spoken and told me but it requires me to have faith. Your prayer at the end came at the perfect time. Thank you as always for sharing.

    1. Faith is the hardest part. It’s so easy to say, but so difficult for us to take that first step. Once we start taking those steps though, it gets easier.
Sometimes the window is a call to remembrance; it is to get our attention and pull us back.
Thank the Lord for the window. And for keeping you safe.
Stunned is a chance and a blessing. You shake your head, get your bearings. You pick yourself up and look around. You stop. You be still. You listen. Sometimes our hearing is momentarily interrupted so we pause and listen. Everything that happens when you hit that glass is for your benefit.
And always remember, you’re not alone. God is keeping you safe.
