Wages

I underline many verses in my Bible, but occasionally a chapter will jump out at me. It is these times when I circle the chapter number instead of marking all the verses. Job 14 is one such chapter. The first and second verses are full of meaning that strikes me in ways I cannot begin to describe. “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.” Job 14:1-2 (KJV)

Isn’t that beautiful? We are given an appointed time on earth to do our duty. We are allotted a certain amount of time to work and if you are concerned about your work, look back to chapter seven:

“Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling? As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work: So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me.” Job 7:1-3 (KJV)

Life is beautifully summed up by Job. Our short time is for nothing other than to give God glory and honor.

We earnestly strive to live life in accordance with God’s perfect will. Everything we do is for the Lord. Everything we do is a reflection of God in us.

You see, Job’s friends spoke the truth, from different points of view. And Job also spoke the truth: he was righteous and without sin. But the LORD came and spoke in truth and power. His will is done to show His power.

Job did nothing wrong; he did nothing to deserve losing his children, his property or health. The whole purpose of Job’s suffering is to show God’s power. God has the power to give and take away. He can destroy and make whole.

We are clay in the Hands of the Potter. He fashions us for His purpose. We are the vessels; He is the food, the water, the grace and mercy.

Our work is Him in us.

God is so good. His way is perfect.

Life is God, and God is life.

We work and don’t see the progress we make. We grow weary from our labors, but look at God. God created this world and everything in it for His glory. Look how patient He is. Our wages are written in our hearts. The reward we receive is not of this world. This world is built to pass away. The world to come is not. It is eternal. The wages we seek are life everlasting in perfect peace with God and the angels.

I am not what I do to make ends meet. I am not my job. I am a child, seeking my Father and hoping with all my heart He shines through all I do. All of my days are full of trouble: I am flesh and fail constantly. But all my days are spent praying and praising in hope for that great reward: the wages of peace everlasting.
