“If the foundations be destroyed, What can the righteous do?” Psalm 11:3 KJV
I was thinking about traditions the other day, about what they are. How we do things in certain ways at set times to symbolize something that has meaning to us. I was lamenting the seeming end of a family tradition.
This verse just took that to another level. What are the foundations of the world? The Word of God is the foundation of the world. His Word is the foundation of all things. His Word is the breath of life. Simply put, the foundation of the world cannot be destroyed.
The traditions can be. The sacrificing of lambs was destroyed when the Spotless Lamb of God, His Son, Jesus Christ, was sacrificed for all the children of grace. We still hold to the Passover and the Last Supper, and other occasions that we are commanded to follow, but there may come a time when we don’t or aren’t able to…and what can the righteous do?
Hold tight to the things that last…the ordinances set up by Jesus when He walked this earth are part of the covenant between the Church and the Father. The righteous must pray without ceasing for the desire and ability to continue to follow through with their end of the deal. If we continually fail to uphold our promise to keep the Lord’s commandment, we will suffer for it.
What can the righteous do? The righteous pray to the Lord for His continued protection, direction and salvation. When we neglect our duty to beg Him for forgiveness and mercy, we are destroying the foundations He set up: not His Word, but our part in His promise.
The Lord keeps His promises but we don’t keep ours. He set up His church in the hearts of His children. Church isn’t some building somewhere. It isn’t a particular denomination or group of people worshiping God in a peculiar way. The Church is made up of the Chosen Ones, the ones God called out to follow Him. The Church is a remnant of all nations, people and tongues, meaning that the Church is composed of people from all walks of life, all regions of earth and of different cultures. Your name for your God may not be the same as what I call my God, but He may be the same person.
And you may worship Him with hands raised while I lower my head and fall to my knees. That’s fine. We are not all given the same gift of worship. The Lord is the giver of gifts. He convicts His children in different ways. Moses was meek, Paul was bold but they each loved and served the Lord with what they were given.
The Lord sets up what we are to follow through His laws written in our hearts by grace. If we are righteous, we must pray for continued blessings to be able and willing to follow His footsteps and keep His ordinances.
It all comes down to prayer and praise. And prayer and praise are from the Lord. He gives the desire, the way and the means to lift our voices, and hands to offer praise unto him. The Holy Bible is full of instruction on His way. We hold on to that sure foundation, we cling to His promise and we beg for Him to forgive us for failing, and thank Him for His unending mercy. By and through His power and grace, the foundation remains to carry all God’s children to eternal peace in Heaven where singing praises to the Creator is all our desire.
